Welcome to BA 225 – Business Law – Summer 2017 – Saint Martin’s University

Welcome to BA225 – Business Law. I look forward to spending the next few weeks with you to learn how the law and legal environment impact business operations.

A few things as we dig into the semester –

There are no tests, but a lot of reading and writing in this class. The writing assignments build into a capstone exercise and presentation. Stay on top of the assignments.

The books are all cheap and available used on Amazon:

REQUIRED:

Law 101 – Feinman, J.M., Law 101 – Everything You Need to Know About American Law, 4th Edition, Oxford University Press, 2014. (Required) ISBN: 978-0-19-934169-6

Legal Guide for Small Business – American Bar Association, Legal Guide for Small Business, 2nd Edition, Random House, 2010. (Required) ISBN: 978-0-375-72303-2

OPTIONAL:

Catechism for Business – Abela, A.V. and Capizzi, J.E. ed., A Catechism for Business, 2nd Edition, Catholic University Press of America, 2016. (Optional) ISBN: 978-0-8132-2884-6

It will be helpful if you have a laptop or tablet for the exams and classes. You should know how to identify issues and do that in the real world – not memorize cases. This isn’t law school – it’s business school. As such, we will learn the application of law to business, not how to be a business lawyer.

As a manager – regardless of major or industry – you must understand the law’s and ethics’ impacts on your family, company, or country.

There should be no reason you do not pass this class if you complete the assignments, focus on what is covered in class, show up and participate. I plan to record the lectures and post them on YouTube, so they will be available if you need to review a class lecture. These are not suitable replacements for in-class participation but should help with reviewing and dealing with the occasional absence.

I’m looking forward to class on May 30!
